{"id":10963,"date":"2016-07-11T09:04:44","date_gmt":"2016-07-11T14:04:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/joemckeever.com\/wp\/?p=10963"},"modified":"2016-08-05T18:09:43","modified_gmt":"2016-08-05T23:09:43","slug":"prayer-embattled-pastor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/joemckeever.com\/wp\/prayer-embattled-pastor\/","title":{"rendered":"The prayer of the embattled pastor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8220;Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and I have done all these things at Your word&#8221; (I Kings 18:36). <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What Elijah prayed on Carmel, I pray.<\/p>\n<p>It is entirely in order for the Lord&#8217;s messenger to pray that the people to whom he was sent will recognize that God is God and fully in charge, and that he himself is the Lord&#8217;s servant, on\u00a0mission from Him.<\/p>\n<p>I prayed that prayer during the worst time of my life when a little group of self-righteous and mean-spirited members clamored for my resignation.\u00a0I was going through the fire,\u00a0being tried as I rarely had.<\/p>\n<p>The prayer felt like the dying gasp of the weakest child in God&#8217;s family.<\/p>\n<p>Did God hear the prayer?\u00a0 Did He answer?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>He heard and answered in His own way, and to the extent\u00a0that\u00a0pleased Him.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s always the way.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s how we would want it if we knew all the facts, all the hearts of everyone involved, and all the plans He has for each person.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a general enough prayer&#8211;that God will show Himself to be Lord, and that He will make it plain that the messenger is His, on an errand for Him, doing His will.<\/p>\n<p>Surely that&#8217;s not too much to ask.<\/p>\n<p>At one time or other, every pastor&#8211;if he is blessed&#8211;will have people questioning his calling, doubting his message, and disagreeing with his leadership.\u00a0 Blessed?\u00a0 We recall Jesus saying, &#8220;Blessed are you when men shall revile you and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely for My sake&#8230;for so persecuted they the prophets who were before you&#8221; (Matthew 5:11-12).<\/p>\n<p>Now,\u00a0being vilified is\u00a0no fun, to be sure, and I&#8217;m not suggesting otherwise.\u00a0\u00a0Only that\u00a0the Lord&#8217;s messenger\u00a0should expect it and not think God has\u00a0dropped the ball\u00a0when He allows\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>Pastors, missionaries, and ministers of all varieties would do well\u00a0to read Matthew 10:16ff regularly to keep their bearings and to\u00a0remedy the unrealistic expectation that everything is always going to go smoothly.\u00a0\u00a0Servants of God\u00a0who do their work well may expect opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Buck Knight, the founder of Nike, Inc., says in his autobiography &#8220;Shoe Dog&#8221; that entrepreneurs have targets drawn on their backs. And the more successful one is, the bigger that target.<\/p>\n<p>That is true of anyone who steps out from the masses to give leadership and direction to them.<\/p>\n<p>Let the pastor take note.<\/p>\n<p>You will have opposition.\u00a0 You will receive criticism.\u00a0 You will become the target of rumors and accusations.<\/p>\n<p>It goes with the territory.<\/p>\n<p>So, when that happens, drop to your knees and give thanks.\u00a0 After all, the pastor who is never questioned and never targeted for fiery arrows is probably not taking a strong-enough stand.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All who desire to live Godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution&#8221; (2 Timothy 3:12).<\/p>\n<p>Expect it, whether you are a lay person or the preacher, a missionary or a denominational leader.<\/p>\n<p>So, go ahead and pray that prayer.\u00a0 &#8220;Lord, let these people know You are God.\u00a0 And while You&#8217;re at it, let them know I&#8217;m your servant and that what I&#8217;m doing is in obedience to Thy command.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, go do your job.\u00a0 Do not flinch, do not back down, and do not fear.<\/p>\n<p>You are serving the living God.\u00a0 Act like it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and I have done all these things at Your word&#8221; (I Kings 18:36).
